Even before M3GAN came out, there was talk about sequels and a spin-off. I might be a little bit cynical, but it seems like they are only making new IPs as a vehicle to churn out content.

Twelve days after M3GAN was released it was announced that M3GAN 2.0 would be going into production. According to the director, Gerard Johnstone, the original release did well and he was pleased, but he isn’t expecting a sequel to be as good.

Johnstone spoke to ComicBook.com about a sequel:

“All I can say is that I’m here in L.A. and been thinking about it, working on it, and I’m just catching up with them this week to talk about it and do a debrief. It’s really important to do a debrief on the first movie, like a post-game analysis, and look at what worked and how we can do it again. I mean, Jesus Christ, it’s difficult to replicate the success. No one was expecting that, so it’s daunting, but exciting at the same time.“

M3GAN made about $170 million worldwide at the box office, which is pretty impressive. Though, I still get the sense that they were planning a franchise from the outset.

Overall, M3GAN was a pretty decent movie. Now that it is on streaming, it’s uncut, since it was edited for a PG-13 theatrical release.

M3GAN 2.0 will be hitting theatres in January 2025.
