Luther has had a very successful run in the UK. I am not sure how it’s gone down in the US, if at all? It stars Idris Elba as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther and has had five seasons so far. It is now getting a movie, which will be out next year and will be set after the 5th series. Elba said in an interview with Empire magazine:

“We really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that…It also gives [series creator and writer] Neil [Cross] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.”

He also said that a Luther movie would have:

“…more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther…essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well.

We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit …And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience.”

I’m pretty sure that image is not set in London, well, maybe Hyde Park.

Luther is being directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross, both no strangers to the series. Alongside Elba, the movie stars Andy Serkis, Cynthia Erivo, Dermot Crowley, and Luaryn Ajufo.

Personally, I’ve never seen Luther, it’s just not my cup of tea, but the last series did boast the highest viewing figures of the entire show’s history, so it remains very popular.

Luther will be out on 23rd March 2023. Streaming or cinema release is TBC.
