Idris Elba has confirmed that filming on the Luther movie will begin this year and admitted it’s been “a long time coming”.

The actor, who played DCI John Luther in the incredibly popular BBC show, said this month that after much delay, filming on the project will officially begin later this year.

Speaking at the All-New Capital Weekender, Elba said that he plans to spend 2021 making more music and Luther: The Movie.

“I’m super excited and I hope the fans are sort of excited for that”

“It’s been a long time coming for a movie, for people that have loved the show. We’ve been making the show for 10 years, so we’re making a film. I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film and that is where I think we are heading towards – a film. And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening.”

“With film, the sky’s the limit. You can be a little bit bolder with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John is always going to be John Luther.”

Luther officially came to an end in 2019 after nearly a decade on the air. The psychological crime drama proved massively popular with audiences and critics alike, bagging itself 11 Emmy nominations over the years.

Elba himself has also been awarded a Critics’ Choice Television Award, a Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in the series.

Last year, Elba has signed a tasty first-look deal with streaming platform Apple TV+ via his Green Door Pictures production company. With this new deal, Elba aims to create global content for the streaming service. Elba founded Green Door Pictures production back in 2013 and has been behind a lot of acclaimed projects.
