If you saw last week’s livestream, we argued discussed what we would talk about this week, and settled on talking about Studio Ghibli, anime and Manga from the early 80s and 90s.

Some of them are classics, Akira, Ghost in a Shell, and Ninja Scrolls, to name a few. Studio Ghibli is better known for movies like Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Spirited Away.

If you haven’t experienced them, you should. They are beautifully drawn with bizarre stories at times, but so very engaging.

They are the type of movies we don’t get to see much anymore. Hand-drawn animations are very rare and everything has been replaced with CGI which all looks too perfect. It can look too good or, in the case of She-Hulk, just bad.

Obviously She-Hulk has started this week too. You can read our review. Now, in the review the CGI isn’t even mentioned, but it’s just not good. You can see it’s fake and that does take the edge off it.

In this week’s livestream we will compare some of the classic anime and hand-drawn animation to modern-day CGI productions. We won’t just talk about how they look, but also the stories as well. Some of the Studio Ghibli movies have these wonderful fantasy stories that are, for want of a better description, bat-shit crazy.

In today’s movie making world it seems that studios just have to focus on the message, the demographic, and making sure they will make money.

The livestream is going to be an interesting one this week, so join us and give us your thoughts. As usual:

12pm CST – 6pm UK

Be there AND be square.
