Jared Leto was reportedly left “alienated and upset” by the new Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.
Leto, who played the DC villain in 2016 film Suicide Squad, was rumoured to be unhappy when Todd Phillips’s new film was announced, according to Hollywood Reporter writer Tatiana Siegel.
In 2018, it was announced that Leto would star in his own standalone film, which would have been billed as a Suicide Squad spin-off.
However, both that film and a Harley Quinn & Joker movie – that would have re-teamed Leto with Margot Robbie – were cut from Warner Bros’ slate of DC projects.
Warners reworked the entire DCEU with more standalone entries. Harley Quinn was hammered into a Birds Or Prey movie that looks Suicide Squad levels of bad.
Aquaman and Wonder Woman continuing and The Batman rebooted. The Phoenix/Phillips Joker was talked up as a one-off and totally stand-alone.
However as people who have seen Joker note, it does have some connecting threads to a potential wider universe, and Phoenix has contradicted earlier statements and said he would love to play the role again.
Leto is also notably absent from the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel. When making the original film, Leto reportedly sent a dead pig to the first table read, because Joker reasons.
