Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to play religious Jonestown cult leader Jim Jones in MGM’s upcoming feature film.

Jones was the leader of the Peoples Temple, who was behind the 1978 mass suicide of more than 900 people at his Jonestown settlement.

In 1955, Jones promoted the temple as a fully integrated congregation promoting Christian Socialism and by the 1970s he had rejected traditional Christianity and claimed to be God.

By 1978, the US sent Representative Leo Ryan and a delegation to Jonestown following human rights abuse rumors, but Ryan was gunned down by Jones’ men along with four other delegates.

Shortly after the conflict, Jones ordered the mass murder-suicide of everyone in the commune by instructing his followers to drink Flavor Aid which was laced with cyanide killing 918 people, a third of whom were children.

Rosenberg is best known for co-writing Venom and will also serve as an executive producer on Jim Jones. Rosenberg’s other writing credits include Gone in 60 Seconds, Con Air, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and its sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level.

DiCaprio will produce the film with his Appian Way Company and Jennifer Davisson. Appian Way has helped release titles such as The Revenant, Shutter Island, The Aviator, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

DiCaprio has got a couple of other movies in the pipeline, he’ll be starring in the upcoming Netflix comedy Don’t Look Up, in which he will be part of an ensemble cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Street and Ariana Grande.
