Causeway is out tomorrow and marks Jennifer Lawrence returning to the screen after taking a break. As part of the publicity for this she has an interview with The New York Times about her career so far. In that interview she mentions 2016s Passengers, which she starred in with Chris Pratt.

In Passengers, Pratt plays Jim who is one of 5,000 passengers in suspended animation on starship travelling for 120-years to its destination. When a malfunction accidentally awakens him alone, and 90 years early, he cannot go back into suspension.

After suffering from his isolation, he wakes up Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) even though this would effectively condemn her to the same fate as him.

Commentators point to the character of Jim essentially being rewarded for his terrible actions and point to Jim lying to her at first as an example of “gas-lighting”. The movie was given a beating by culture warriors.

Those commentators seemed not to realise that Passengers is essentially a morality tale about how imperfect people make flawed decisions and must seek redemption. In this case, Jim saves the entire ship of 5,000 who would have died in their sleep if both he and Aurora weren’t awake. He also works endlessly to find a way to allow her to go back into suspended animation, therefore dooming himself to die alone.

When he does find a solution, she refuses and decides to stay with him. It is her own decision.

Lawrence says her friend, the singer Adele, warned her not to do that movie, saying:

“Adele told me not to do it! She was like, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have listened to her.”

Lawrence goes on to say:

“Wait, who decided that this was a good movie?”

Thus proving that sometimes those who play dress up and make believe while reading lines others have written for them sometimes just don’t understand what it is they are doing. Causeway is on Apple TV+ from today.
