Over the last couple of days, there has been a growing social media campaign to cast actress Kristen Stewart as a gender-swapped Joker opposite Robert Pattinson’s Batman. The two previously, and famously, having starred together in the Twilight series and dated for a while. Not content with shipping online in downright creepy fan fiction, social media idiots are now trying to ship into movies.
As we all know here at Last Movie Outpost, social media is not real life. If only politicians and mainstream media could understand this perhaps we wouldn’t be in the middle of a raging culture war and the lunatic fringe would have been left where they belong, on the fringes.
Usually, Hollywood and everyone in it just can’t help themselves but get involved and fan the flames. A pointlessly gender-swapped role is usually only the tip of the iceberg. However, Kristen Stewart once again demonstrated good instincts and common sense when she was recently asked if she would ever consider the role.
Stewart responded to Variety saying:
“I love the energy behind that [fan campaign]. It’s really been done so well. I feel like, maybe, we don’t traipse over, but I love that gusto. Let’s figure something else out. I’m totally down to play a freaky, scary person.”
She went on to say:
“Let’s do something new.”
So sorry Joker shippers. Kristen Stewart will not be joining Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Cesar Romero, Mark Hamill, and Cameron Monaghan culturally appropriating clownface.
The 31-year-old actress is out doing press for her next big role as Princess Diana, Lady Diana Spencer, in Spencer. That movie met with critical acclaim at Venice and Telluride and gets good notices elsewhere. She recently completed David Cronenberg’s new film Crimes of the Future.
