As you know by now, Willow has been cancelled after just one season. Disney swung the axe and Willow went off to join that big channel in the sky where cancelled shows continue. Where Baywatch Nights and that new Knight Rider rub shoulders with The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.
These things happen. Not everything is a hit. Except it may not actually be cancelled. Well, not that cancelled, anyway.
In a lengthy message posted on social media, writer Jon Kasdan has said there might be something more… nuanced, happening.
The future of the show is unclear, this is true, but part of that is due to Willow Volume II (as he refers to it) being quite sizeable and needing most of the same actors back. Not all of them had contracts, and many of them had commitments elsewhere. Without a 100% certain series order for Volume II, it was held to be unfair to hold back cast members who did have a contract from accepting other opportunities while they waited for the path to be cleared for a potential Willow Volume II.
“A decision was made to release our main cast for other opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year. With all the TV and movies in production around the world, it feels unfair to limit an actor’s availability without a clear sense of when you’re going to need them again.”
He goes on to say, over three tweets, filming is slowing down and not cancelled. The same is true of many shows as production budgets at streamers are squeezed. You can view the first of the three tweets that make up the statement from Kasdan here:

He concludes by telling fans to “…Ignore the bird, follow the river…” and clearly very much thinks there is a chance the show is coming back.
