Julian Sands, star of The Killing Fields, Arachnaphobia, Warlock and A Room With A View has gone missing while hiking. The 65-year-old British actor was in the Baldy Bowl hiking area, approximately 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Sands was an experienced hiker, mountaineer and outdoor enthusiast with experience in the Andes and the Alps. He was reported missing at 7:30 p.m.  on Friday January 13th.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded and deployed ground crews before bad weather meant deteriorating trail conditions and increased avalanche risks forced them to return to base. Night time temperatures are routinely below freezing in this type of weather at this time of year in the region.

Sands, who grew up in Yorkshire, England, has lived in the Los Angeles area for years with his wife, the writer Evgenia Citkowitz. He has three children. Alongside appearances in Leaving Las Vegas and Naked Lunch, he has spent considerable time working in television on shows such as 24, Banshee, Stargate: SG-1, and the Stephen King mini-series Rose Red. He was also the second voice of Jor-El in Smallville and was in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Sheriff department spokesperson Nathan Campos said:

“It’s extremely dangerous, and experienced hikers are having a hard time getting through there.”

In a 2018 interview with the Guardian, Sands talked about his fixation with mountain climbing and the importance of continuing to embrace new adventures as he aged. In another 2020 interview, he described himself as at his happiest:

“…close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning”.

The closest he had previously come to death, Sands said, was:

“…in the early 90s, in the Andes, caught in an atrocious storm above 20,000ft with three others. We were all in a very bad way. Some guys close to us perished; we were lucky.”
