It was clear that Jared Leto’s version of the Joker was meant to feature much more in Suicide Squad and the wider DCEU. He almost had more scenes in the trailers that didn’t appear in the final movie, than he had in the movie itself. You also don’t hire an Oscar winner like Leto for an iconic nemesis like the Joker and only use him for five minutes.
Clearly there should have been more to come. Leto’s psychotic bling gangster version has been mocked by many fans, but given the DCEU’s struggles it is worth at least exploring where this version of the character could go. It almost seems a shame that we never really got to see Leto face off against Affleck’s Batman beyond a sixty second opening scene.
Well this version is back for the Snyder Cut of Justice League, and Zack Snyder himself teased a cryptic picture that could well hint at a toned down version of the character. Less facial tattoos, more menace?
Could a different take on the character give Leto a chance to redeem his polarizing Joker performance in the eyes of fans? Will this version maybe return again? Wonder Woman 3 and Aquaman 2 are set, with The Batman and The Flash. Joker has been rumored to show Arthur Fleck as an inspiration for the clown prince of crime, but perhaps not the actual man himself. So there could be room for a return, particularly with The Flash apparently going to introduce the multiverse and feature Affleck’s return.
