They just couldn’t help themselves, could they? A pretty perfect franchise, building nicely. Profits rolling in. A set niche in cinema being expertly filled.
So what does Hollywood have to do? It’s usual! Get on in there deep and pump this until it’s dead. Ruin it as quickly as they possibly can and then sit there and wonder why their golden goose has stopped laying these golden eggs. Hollywood once again proving that truly smart people avoid careers there.
What are we dribbling on about? John Wick and Hollywood’s never-ending ability to shoot itself in the foot is about to rear its ugly head again. For a start, Len Wiseman, responsible for the trio of stupidity that is Underworld, Live Free Or Die Hard and breaking up with Kate Beckinsale is joining the universe.
Wiseman has been hired to direct Ballerina, a female-centric spinoff of the John Wick franchise for Lionsgate. Clearly to be based around the Ballerina society helmed by Anjelica Houston in John Wick 3: Parabellum, the Shay Hatten penned the script will focus on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. So far, so generic.
Hatten also wrote Wick 3 and the upcoming Army Of The Dead for Zack Snyder.
The picture is on a fast track with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski all set to produce.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is on track for a May 2021 release.
