John Wick has been a hit, with two sequels released, and more on the way. There is also going to be a spin-off, Ballerina, starring Ana De Armas.
I had to check. I thought Ballerina was a character from a previous John Wick movie, but it turns out Ballerina is a standalone movie, with the story, according to the blurb:
“A young female assassin seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.”
It sounds suspiciously like a female John Wick. Keanu Reeves was in talks to have Wick turn up in the new movie, either as a cameo or maybe as someone more involved with the story. He has been seen in Prague as the production gets underway out there. Maybe John needs someone to make his sandwiches?
Casting news for Ballerina has also confirmed that Ian McShane would be back as Winston. According to the producers, Winston will have a ‘pivotal’ role. Basil Iwanyk said:
“We’re thrilled to have Ian McShane joining us for a pivotal role in ‘Ballerina’. He’s been such an integral part of the franchise since the original John Wick. It’s been fun to have him on this journey as the Wick universe expands.“
Winston’s character is also in a three-part prequel about the Continental, the hotel from the series:
“…the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, a centerpiece of the John Wick universe, through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals.“
Filming for the Ballerina started this week.
