Disney and Marvel Studios made something of a strategic error when they succumbed to a moral panic and bowed, albeit temporarily, to Cancel Culture. When some ill-judged, and in poor taste, past tweets from James Gunn were surfaced by online Offence Archeologists the internet did its thing and Hollywood did what it always does. It panicked.

James-Gunn

Gunn was removed from Guardian’s Of The Galaxy in the MCU until Disney realized they had made a mistake, under pressure from cast and crew, and reinstated him.

This sabbatical from all things MCU left him free to be snapped up by Marvel’s great rivals, DC. He jumped on board and created, arguably, one of the DCEU’s few successes to date – The Suicide Squad. Warner Bros. liked what they saw so much they gave him his own TV show. Based on a character from his DC movie, Peacemaker premieres this Thursday on HBO Max. This has also left one of the MCU’s most creative talents with one foot in the DCEU.

The Suicide Squad

Nice move, Disney!

You can bet DC is gonna leverage that relationship. In fact, they are already. In an interview with Collider, the writer and director revealed that he has a top-secret DC project in the pipeline. He refused to be drawn on details but confirmed the existence of whatever it is they are cooking up:

“You know, we’re stepping forward. It keeps happening. We’ll see what’s happening, and I’ll know what’s happening very shortly. I dealt with it last night and this morning.”

When asked, he would confirm that the medium the project is planned for:

“It’s TV. There you go.”

Something entirely new? Another spin-off from The Suicide Squad? Who knows with the DCEU in its characteristic, and permanent state of chaotic flux.

James Gunn has jumped back to the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in production and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special due in time for Christmas 2022 on Disney+.

Is anyone curious to see what James Gunn could do with Superman?
