It was a great idea on paper, but in usual Stephen King fashion it didn’t quite nail the ending. The new version of It and It: Chapter Two (2017 & 2019) did fairly good numbers, so of course there’s a prequel series coming out called Welcome to Derry.

We reported back in June that writing had begun, the new news is that Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane are serving as showrunners on Welcome to Derry. Andy Muschietti, who directed the first two It movies, is co-producing with his sister Barbara and Fuchs. The producers have also written the first two episodes of the new series.

In the book and movies, Pennywise would turn up every 28 years and prey on children. Lightweight, Disney has been doing it constantly for many years now. The Ankler has speculated that Welcome to Derry will:

“… likely explore the origin story of Pennywise the Clown as well as the dawn of the 27-year curse that haunts the small Maine town.”

Makes sense if you’re doing a prequel. I’m guessing, in between those 28 years, Derry is a very nice place and nothing much happens.

There is no news on casting at the moment, but it makes sense for Bill Skarsgard to come back as Pennywise as he definitely a high point as the creepy clown.
