Road House is one of those movies that is now a classic. You had Swayze, mullets, Kelly Lynch, round-house kicks, Sam Elliott, boobs… everything an action movie in the 1980s needed.
Apparently, Doug Liman, known for movies like Go, Swingers, Mr & Mrs Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, and Chaos Walking, to name a few, is also a big fan. He is looking to direct a Road House remake. I say remake, since it might be a reboot, redo or whatever it is that Hollywood calls these things these days.
In talks to star is Jake Gyllenhaal, presumably as Dalton, a bouncer and cooler who is hired to clean up a rough and tumble bar in Missouri. As the bar gets cleaned up, it attracts the ire of the town’s powerful and corrupt businessman, making things worse. If you haven’t seen it, I mean, what is wrong with you?
The original was directed by the excellently named Rowdy Herrington and grossed $30 million on a budget of $15 million. Over the years it has become a cult classic and one of the movies that put Swayze on the map as a great action star. Annette Bening was originally cast as the love interest but she was fired for a lack of chemistry with the lead.
The movie was shot on location throughout Newhall, Valencia, and Canyon Country in California. The New Double Deuce bar was actually Anaheim’s Cowboy bar. A monster truck, Bigfoot #7, was specially built for the movie.
At the moment, this is all just rumor and report. Nothing has been signed. Gyllenhaal is currently filming the Afghanistan war thriller The Interpreter with Guy Ritchie.
Liman is next directing Everest, starring Ewan McGregor as famed mountaineer George Mallory.
Is it a shame to remake a movie like Road House? Does it even need a remake? We will keep you posted as we hear more.
