Is the famous TV show Moonlighting about to make a comeback? According to the writer/producer Glenn Gordon Caron, some big news could be coming as soon as today.

The famed 1980s drama starred Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis as a pair of private detectives. Moonlighting was a mixture of drama, comedy, mystery, and romance, and was considered to be one of the first successful and influential examples of comedy drama, cementing “dramedy” as a distinct television genre. So do we blame Moonlighting for Ally McBeal?

The show’s theme song was co-written and performed by jazz singer Al Jarreau and became a hit single in its own right, while the show made Willis a major star and relaunching Shepherd’s career after a string of failures. No Moonlighting, No Die Hard… well, at least no John McClane that we recognise today. In 2007, the series was listed as one of Time magazine’s 100 Best TV Shows of All-Time.

There has been talk of a reboot for a number of years. The likely announcement is that the original show is coming to Disney+ (or Hulu in the USA) as this was always prevented by music licensing issues. The show was famous for its use of music and the rights would have needed to have been renewed to some famous tracks. Caron had previously declined Disney’s request to swap in cheaper music.

Maybe Disney bought Motown?
