After being announced as part of the Disney Investor Day last December, things went quiet regarding Ironheart. The story of Riri Williams, a 15-year-old MIT student and genius inventor who reverse engineers Tony Stark’s technology to create an Iron Man suit of her own was set to star Dominique Thorne, but then there was no news.
She was born and raised in Oakland, CA, and alongside her work as Program Director of Youth Speaks, a San Francisco-based literary arts non-profit, she was also a founding member of the hip hop collective The Getback along with Daveed Diggs.
Her writing credits include Snowpiercer and Amazing Stories.
The show will join the ever-growing Marvel line-up on Disney+. WandaVision and Falcon And The Winter Soldier are down, Loki coming soon. Numerous others are in development.
No word yet on whether Robert Downey Jr. will return to the role of Tony Stark. In Avengers: Endgame we were introduced to his AI form, which is how he appears in these stories. The character of Ironheart has played a part in Civil War II and Secret Empire storylines for Marvel.
The character has had some controversy. The title was pulled from shelves in October 2016 after previews of the cover were criticized for sexualizing the 15-year-old lead character. Artist Stefano Caselli explained that his rendition of the character was intended to depict:
“…a sassy, coming-of-age young woman…”
This then led to further criticism that the character being written by a white man rather than a black woman, leading to a debate about the lack of black female writers at Marvel.
