Filming is underway on The Acolyte, the latest entry in the Star Wars universe. This takes place way outside any era we have seen before in the galaxy far, far away. The Acolyte is set at the end of the High Republic era. That places it around 100 years before the The Phantom Menace. According to the blurb, it is:

“…a mystery-thriller that takes viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers.”

Other information out there says The Acolyte will revolve around a former Padawan who reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.

The show will co-stars Lee Jung-Jae, Dafne Keen, and Dean-Charles Chapman. The cast will be rounded out by Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) created the series and serves as showrunner. The ever reliable Dark Horizons shared a set photo of Headland speaking with actors preparing to shoot a scene.

The Acolyte is expected to air in the back half of next year, after The Mandalorian Season 3 premieres on Disney+ in March. Star Wars fans everywhere ask themselves if this will be more Andor and The Mandalorian, or Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Book Of Boba Fett?

If it looks like it is lining up to be more badly thought out, completely unsubtle wish fulfilment from the failed story group and leaden Lucasfilm leadership then we fear it may turn out to be the latter. If it is brave enough to do something different and treat its audience as adults then we can still have hope.
