According to Variety, the upcoming show is about a teacher who helps her class recreate The Goonies in a shot-for-shot remake.
Originally known only as the Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project, the script was adapted by Sarah Watson into a pilot episode for Fox. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, it has now shifted to Disney+ as well as getting a new name – Our Time.
The pilot was originally ordered by Fox, but it was seen as a bit too young for their network.
Clancy Collins White, VP and head of development said:
“We immediately swung into high gear and hit the town with it. We did not yet have anything in development at Disney Plus. It’s been another example of being able to carve a pathway where there wasn’t one by virtue of a great story, a great pilot, a great series. The deal has taken a while to make, but we’re really excited to be moving forward.”
Watson’s original script centered on Stella Cooper, a woman who fled back to her hometown after failing to make anything of herself in New York. Upon taking a job as a substitute teacher, her inspiration is rekindled once she meets three students with the dream of recreating The Goonies in its entirety.
She agrees to help them make this undertaking a reality, recapturing every iconic shot and line with the amateur acting and storytelling of a home movie
The synopsis for Our Time reads:
“After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope and ultimately salvation when she agrees to help three students who are pursuing their filmmaking dreams by putting on an impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of the student’s favourite movies… ‘The Goonies‘. Over the course of the season, their passion will inspire a town in desperate need of hope in this love letter to the power of cinema, storytelling and dreams.”
Executive producers include Watson, Gail Berman, Hend Baghdady, Lauren Shuler Donner, Richard Donner, who died in July, and Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.
There is no further news on casting or release dates at the moment.
