Hulu has passed on Rodham and thrown out the show to be shopped around to other studios and platforms. Writer-producer Sarah Treem’s show has been in development at 20th Television for the streamer since 2020.

It is based on the Curtis Sittenfeld novel of the same name. The New York Times bestseller imagines an alternative universe in which Hillary Rodham Clinton met and dated Bill Clinton at Yale Law School, but never married him. Instead of the life Clinton actually led, Rodham shows Hilary going on to become a Northwestern University professor, and eventually launching a presidential run in 2016.

Real-world events, such as rape accusations against Bill Clinton and the rise of Donald Trump, are covered but they play differently in this alternative reality.

Rodham was to have spanned decades, and Dakota Fanning and Claire Danes were cast to portray her at various stages of her life. Recently Edie Falco played Clinton in the FX series Impeachment: American Crime Story. Clive Owen played Bill Clinton, with Beanie Feldstein playing the role of Monica Lewinsky.

If anyone should pick this up, they remain attached, as does Treem who will write and executive produce. James Ponsoldt was locked to direct with Handmaid’s Tale producer Warren Littlefield producing.

Treem was co-creator and showrunner of The Affair and worked on In Treatment, House of Cards, and How to Make It in America.
