Avatar: The Way Of Water just keeps on bringing the cheddar, and maintained number one spot with another $32 million domestic and yet more overseas. M3GAN is outperforming all expectations. The notoriously slow month of January was providing some cheer to the beleaguered sector at last. Further down the weekly charts someone was struggling, though, House Party.
Producer LeBron just can’t catch a break. A few months ago, House Party was staring down the barrel of a Batgirl like cancellation as it was created exclusively for HBO Max. Then the higher ups at Warner Bros. decided a theatrical release was a good strategy.
A measly $3.9 million from over a thousand screens for its opening three days is not the return Warner Bros would have wanted. The move seemingly showed that the studio had confidence in the title and its ability to lure moviegoers. It hasn’t and is now a flop. Even the appearances of Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, and Juvenile (I am guessing these are not their real names) couldn’t save it.
If Warner Bros. thought they were going to spawn a franchise like the original trilogy then that plan is trashed.
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which had only dropped 19 percent from its previous weekend, passed the $100 million mark in third place behind Avatar and M3GAN, followed by Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto and Gerard Butler’s Plane to round out the top 5.
The whole box office remains stalled on the Avatar show as we wait for Marvel’s Phase 5 to kick off with Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania in a few weeks.
