The owners of Sunset Studios in LA have just bought a 91 acre site in Hertfordshire, UK for £120 million ($160 million) and are planning to build a new studio on it.
Hertfordshire is just north of London, which means it’s not a long way for stars, crew and production teams to travel.
The studio is subject to planning permission at the moment, but the UK government is doing what it can to ‘support’ the development. They would like such spaces around the UK in general. In other words, palms have been greased and cheques have gone through.
The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, Oliver Dowden, has said:
“This new studio is yet another vote of confidence in the UK’s booming film and TV industry. Through the British Film Commission, we’re supporting the development of stage spaces like this across the UK – boosting the local economy and backing our world-class creatives to make the next Bond blockbuster or bingeworthy box set.”
Another LA studio, Hudson Pacific, has joined the investment company Blackstone. The new studio hopes that it’ll contribute about £300 million annually to the local area and create up to 4,500 jobs.
Head of Blackstone Real Estate Europe, James Seppala, has said the development would:
“Deliver a world-class studio facility that will help ensure that the UK continues to be a premiere destination for content production globally.”
As this moves forward, we’ll keep you updated.
