When Russian forces rolled into Ukraine six days ago, most of the world was surprisingly resolute and aligned in both their condemnation and the speed and force of sanctions. If the tumbling rouble, a bank run, an unfolding military disaster, an increasingly isolated Putin, and international pariah status hasn’t stopped them then it is time to bring out the big guns – Hollywood!

Hollywood

Multiple major movies have been pulled from Russian schedules by US studios. Warner Bros. Pictures has pulled The Batman, Sony has yanked Morbius, Paramount has withdrawn Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and The Lost City, and Disney has pulled Turning Red.

Netflix is also refusing to carry the twenty Russian free-to-air channels that they would be required to stream under Russian law. Some of these channels have been accused of being Kremlin propaganda and of representing a completely false view of Russian actions back to the Russian people.

It gets worse for Russia, as Angelina Jolie, Mark Ruffalo, Ryan Reynolds, David Lynch, and Hayden Panettiere have all spoken out against the invasion, while the Motion Picture Association of America issued a statement saying they stand with the international community in upholding the rule of law and condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Take that Russia! No Batman for you! Now, pray we don’t unleash the hashtags and start changing our profile pics to Ukrainian flags.
