The Superfly remake helmer and music video maker who goes by the name of Director X has lined up his next project. Robin Hood.

The classic English folk tale of a vigilante hero of the people named Robin Hood stealing from the rich to help provide for the poor has been told and retold numerous times since the 13th century. As we come out of a pandemic that has seen a staggering transfer of wealth to the global hyper-rich and establishment classes, while expecting the aspirational middle to now pay the check, maybe its time has come again?

The director… erm… X is teaming with Orphan Black writer Chris Roberts to create the action-drama series Robyn Hood.

It will tell the story of a 21st century Gen Z woman, the fearless Robyn Loxley, who is a member of a masked hip-hop band called The Hood. Set in the Sherwood Towers project, a cluster of rental high-rises in a working-class corner of New Nottingham, Robyn will fight injustice, hold the corrupt accountable, and help her community.

Director X will be sharing co-showrunner duties with Roberts and will direct several episodes. He had this to say in the announcement:

“This is the perfect time to modernize Robin Hood. We are currently living in the gilded age 2.0, where billionaires have way too much and the poor have far too little. We need someone to fight for justice.”

Director X is the man behind such music videos as Bootylicious by Destiny’s Child, Work by Rihanna, Thong Song by Sisqó, Yeah by Usher featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris, and Hotline Bling by Drake.

His movies include Across the Line and Center Stage: On Pointe.

Boat Rocker Studios is producing the series. The show will shoot in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario. Casting is underway for a 2023 debut.
