James Gunn has torn into a claim that Henry Cavill’s Superman could appear on television as well, if and when he returns to the role and the DCEU / DCU. Over the past few weeks we reported that Cavill was fully back as Superman, then a few days later another report said “Not so fast!” and that there was still no contract in place or even firm offer o the table.
We always try to be a little cautions when reporting on news we hear out there on the internet. If we think it is the kind of thing our Outposters would want to know and talk about, we report it but we try and tag these up as “Rumor Control” so you know what lens to view the news through.
The internet is awash with reports from “Internet Tipster (Insert Name Here)” on every facet of movies, particularly when it relates to the big franchises. Sometimes they will breathlessly report:
“Our sources tell us that…”
Then proceed to say something that seems like maybe it is what they want, rather than what will be. Usually these online reports are ignored by Hollywood completely. Last week one was absolutely not ignored. James Gunn didn’t mess about.
“Internet Tipster Mikey Sutton” of Geekosity claimed that Henry Cavill has signed a new Superman contract, and that contract involves television appearances.
James Gunn, who is currently hard at work setting up the future of the DC Universe alongside his co-CEO of DC Pictures Peter Safran, responded directly to the article on Twitter.
I’m not sure if you’re purposely lying or being taken advantage of by someone lying to you, but, as I’ve stated on here before, NO ONE knows what’s happening at DC Studios right now other than me & Peter. That would include writing up any new contracts for anyone at this point.

Direct, and to the point, Gunn said:
“I’m not sure if you’re purposely lying or being taken advantage of by someone lying to you, but, as I’ve stated on here before, NO ONE knows what’s happening at DC Studios right now other than me & Peter. That would include writing up any new contracts for anyone at this point.”
So, Man Of Steel 2 is not confirmed, Cavill returning is not confirmed, and definitely the idea of him being on television as well as in movies is not confirmed. One man who has had plenty so say on the matter, a man who is notoriously not short of confidence, is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who has talked the strategy of DC under the previous regime and how he was completely against their decisions regarding Cavill and Superman:
“At the end of the day, the studio was not bringing Henry Cavill back, inexplicably and inexcusably. But we weren’t going to take no for an answer. Myself, my Seven Bucks co-founder and chairwoman, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, our Seven Bucks president. This has been years in the making regarding bringing Henry Cavill back. And years of strategic conversations and we were not gonna take no for an answer…
And there was no other Superman, by the way, to bring back. Henry Cavill is our generation’s Superman and, in my opinion, the greatest Superman. And I mean that respectfully to the other actors, especially Christopher Reeve. But the greatest Superman of all time.
So again, bringing Henry back, now we build out the DC universe properly, strategically, smartly. Again, the hierarchy of power in the DC universe has changed. And of course, we have new leadership at DC and at Warner Bros. Again, the hierarchy of power in the DC universe has changed. So, it’s a new era in the DC universe.”
Cavill recently left his role as Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher series, leading most of us to believe he was clearing his slate in anticipation of a busier time in the DCU. Black Adam is out on PVOD already following what some are calling underperformance in theaters.
Cavill’s Superman appeared in Shazam! and Peacemaker in the form of body doubles. His Black Adam cameo was his first full performance since Justice League, nearly six years ago.
