In a Twitter chat with fans, Guardians Of The Galaxy writer / director James Gunn has revealed which actor he struggled to cast, as Marvel were opposed. The director is just finishing up The Suicide Squad over at rival DC before returning to Marvel and Disney for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
A Twitter user asked him:
“What’s a decision you had to fight tooth and nail for on a movie? Like looking back you still wonder why did the studio fight so hard against it?”
Gunn directly admitted he locked heads with Marvel supremo Kevin Feige over the casting of Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer.
“I’d say hiring @DaveBautista on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. The first thing Kevin Feige told me after seeing the first cut is how right I was about him.”
Bautista, a former professional wrestler, is now a Marvel favorite with his deadpan delivery and complete lack of nuance or sarcasm adding laughs, often at completely inappropriate moments.
Bautista’s Drax will next appear in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder with the rest of his Guardians crew.
As of right now there’s no set release date for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
Also, there’s the The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special that is set to release in the Holiday season on 2022 on Disney+.
