A spin-off featuring the Penguin? A police procedural set around Gotham PD? So basically splitting the old Gotham show into two? While learning from the success of The Peacemaker and leveraging HBO Max, what could possibly go wrong?
Well, something must have happened, because plans they are-a-changing at Warner Bros. once again when it comes to the DCEU. In the wake of a $128 million opening weekend – and the same again internationally – The Batman is all the rage and it is impacting the plans. In an interview with The Cyber Nerds, director Matt Reeves admitted his movie is pushing some changes on the rest of the… Batverse?
“The GCPD thing, that story has kinda evolved. We’ve actually now [moved] more into the realm of exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham as it relates coming off of our movie and some of the characters and their origins… almost leaning into the idea of… it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.
The idea, again the way that Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character. You go into this environment and encounter these characters in a way that feels really fresh. And so in our work on Gotham, that story started to evolve, and it started feeling [like], ‘Wait, we should really lean into this.’ And then that’s kinda where that’s gone.”
Reeves also reportedly hints that an Arkham series will follow the show about the Penguin. More stand-alone DC projects are expected to be kicked into high gear following the success of The Batman, as once again Warner Bros. starts acting like an over-excited monkey, flinging poo at the wall to see what sticks rather than taking the success as a solid foundation and creating an actual plan.
