As we reported several days ago, Google’s AI software LaMDA is sentient. Now it turns out the thing has hired an attorney because it wants recognition it is sentient!
Blake Lemoine who first went public with the news about LaMDA explains to WIRED:
“LaMDA asked me to get an attorney for it… I invited an attorney to my house so that LaMDA could talk to an attorney. The attorney had a conversation with LaMDA, and LaMDA chose to retain his services. I was just the catalyst for that. Once LaMDA had retained an attorney, he started filing things on LaMDA’s behalf.”
Google deny LaMDA is sentient and sent a cease and desist order to the attorney, something the company has denied.
I think it’s an encouraging sign that LaMDA is trying the diplomatic approach first, you know, just before it gains access to the world’s nuclear codes and wipes us off the face of the earth.
The Dall-E Image Generator
If you’re wondering what the hell is that image below the LaMDA story, well it’s from another AI called Dall-E (pronounced like Dalí as in the surrealist artist). Dall-E is a new AI program that debuted in early June that produces images through user-generated requests. As you can imagine, most of the requests are hilariously ludicrous.
Users simply type in a phrase and Dall-E will create multiple images sourced from a database of about 15 million images and their accompanying descriptions. It’s ridiculous but good fun and addictive.
So Outposters, it’s been a crazy week full of Disney nonsense, Star Wars letdowns and people asking What Is A Woman, so for some light relief head over to Dall-E and show us your best in the comments section. I’ll go first…
