Good name for a band, Godzilla And The Titans. Anyway, the upcoming Apple TV+ series from Legendary Productions has signed Mari Yamamoto (Pachinko) to join the cast.
The Godzilla-Monsterverse continues its single minded quest for true “shared universe” status with this streaming show. This follows Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) on the big screen with another sequel due in 2024.
Along with Netflix’s Skull Island animated TV series, this show will tell a more detailed story set within this Monsterverse. According to the blurb:
“Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the untitled Monsterverse series will explore one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”
So the working assumption so far is that this series will at least start some time between Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. This means the question of what happened after Godzilla vs. Kong will likely be left to the big screen sequel.
This intra-series prequel/sequel approach is common now in the MCU and Star Wars. Star Wars is practically driven on it these days, with The Mandalorian, Book Of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan and soon Andor all filling in gaps in what is already known. The mark of a true shared universe?
Details of the characters to be portrayed, when they haven’t appeared in the Monsterverse before, are under wraps. We know Yamamoto joins father and son team Kurt and Wyatt Russell in the show, alongside Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. Ken Watabe returns from the movies and Matt Shakman will direct.
