Filming is underway on George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa. The first behind-the-scenes pics have arrived online showing activity on the set. The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke. It is a one-off, expected to dive into the origins of the character portrayed by Charlize Theron in the 2015 fourth entry into the franchise.

The photos are clearly taken from a distance so none of the leads can be seen. The usual post-apocalyptic scenes with bike riders can be seen in progress. They are shooting in the same location as Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior). This is western New South Wales, around Broken Hill and Silverton. With an expected budget of $163 million (AUD233 million) this makes it the most expensive movie ever produced completely in Australia.

In Mad Max: Fury Road, Imperator Furiosa is introduced early in the film during a speech made by Immortan Joe, during which she is shown to work logistics for Joe’s citadel, specifically charged with the task of ferrying oil from Gas Town to the Citadel. To expedite the process Furiosa is granted command over a small outfit of Warboys – men who serve as Joe’s armed force – and entrusted with the “war rig”, a heavily armed and armored tractor-trailer truck complete with a tri-axle tanker trailer capable of towing an additional fuel tank trailer or “pod”.

Furiosa turns against him in order to free “The Five Wives”, Joe’s female concubines or “breeders”. She meets “Mad” Max Rockatansky during her journey and, despite initial hostility, the two become allies and team up to drive The Five Wives to a safe environment called The Green Place.

Miller and Doug Mitchell will produce this prequel.
