Lego Movie directors and successful members of the Lucasfilm escape committee Phil Lord and Chris Miller are on their next project, this time at MGM.

They will produce and direct Project Hail Mary (the working title). This is the film adaptation of The Martian author Andy Weir’s new novel.

Ryan Gosling is set to star and e-mail leaks studio supreme Amy Pascal has signed on as a producer. Gosling, Weir, Aditya Sood and Ken Kao will also produce. This is not the first time Lord, Miller and Pascal have been on a producing gig together. They previously worked together on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

No details about the plot are known except the basic outline. A lone astronaut on a spaceship has to undertake a mission to save the entire planet.

The Hollywood rumor mill says Gosling was given a manuscript of the book before publishing and before he had even finished it he was setting the movie up at and lobbying for Lord and Miller to be involved. Universal had to give permission as the duo are locked into a first look deal at that studio.
