Noooow, this is a story, all about how…a TV company has decided to reboot a beloved 90’s comedy and when I say reboot, that is certainly what it is.
It seems all of the comedy has been replaced with gritty drama in a very bold move. Carlton didn’t even do his dance.
The original series made a superstar of Will Smith as the fast-talking, wise-cracking “Fresh Prince”, who had to move in with his wealthy family in Bel-Air. The original series was light and fun and had a great cast that really worked together well on screen.
The original series started in 1990 and ran for 6 seasons, with the last episode shown in 1996, but that hasn’t stopped it being replayed and loved by audiences all over the world. Last year HBO Max had a 30 Year Anniversary show. This reunited the remaining cast. James Avery, who played Uncle Phil, sadly passed away in 2013.
The new reboot, simply called Bel-Air, has all of the same characters but a very different tone. Jabari Banks is playing Will. Adrian Homes is Phillip Banks, Cassandra Freeman is Vivian Banks, Olly Sholotan is Carlton, Coco Jones is Hilary, Akira Akbar is Ashley, and Jordan L Jones is Jazz. I’m guessing we won’t see Jazz getting thrown out of the house through the front door though.
Will Smith has developed the new series with a fan, Morgan Cooper, who made an original trailer about a gritty reboot. This was the original trailer he made.
That does look pretty good, but to then go and make a new series about it? In the process retooling a much-loved original? That doesn’t seem like the best idea, but here we are. Smith said about Cooper:
“Three years ago, my guy Morgan Cooper uploaded his fan trailer to YouTube, showing how he envisioned the Fresh Prince as a drama, now, here is the first full look at his retelling of the story that’s always been so close to my heart.”
So Smith is on board with it, maybe he’ll make a guest appearance? The new series, Bel-Air, will be on streaming on 13th February.
