A new Willy Wonka is on the way, whether you want it or not! Following Gene Wilder’s role-defining performance and Johnny Depp doing… something else, it is time for Timothee Chalamet to step into the role for Wonka.
Principal photography on Wonka began in the United Kingdom last month with Paul King in the director’s chair. Seamus McGarvey is cinematographer, Nathan Crowley is production designer and respected costume designer Lindy Hemming, the woman who dresses James Bond, is also onboard. This is a talented line-up that means the look and feel could well be exceptional.
They are filming in the provincial town of Lyme Regis and at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, a studio complex in Watford which is just outside London and known as the home of Harry Potter. The location is not the only connection as David Heyman is producing.
A shortlist of actors to star as Wonka apparently included Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling, and Ezra Miller as they conformed this movie would be a prequel to the story presented in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Tom Holland was said to be the front runner for the role, until May 2021 when Timothée Chalamet was cast in the title role and the makers revealed it will be a musical with songs specially written for the production.
The screenplay is written by Simon Farnaby and a major cast expansion announcement in September 2021 broke the news that Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman and Jim Carter were all joining the cast. Screenwriter Farnaby is also set for a role.
Now Chalamet himself has revealed the first view of the look and feel of the character of Wonka in a post on Social Media:

The Dickensian setting, apparent in the picture, would place the movie around 100 years before the Wilder version. Wonka is set to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 17, 2023.
