We had enough of reboots/reimagining/sequels/prequels, but now the new one is “set in the same universe”. Evil Dead Rise is set in the same universe as Evil Dead, but not actually Evil Dead. Here is the new trailer. It is a Red Band trailer, so be warned, don’t watch it at work.
This movie was supposed to get a release on streaming but scored so highly with test screenings, they decided to give it a theatrical release.
There are a couple of shots in there that pay homage to Sam Raimi’s original. There are also some shots that look like another horror with a budget. Raimi is still involved with the franchise and, apparently, handpicked the director Lee Cronin.
Cronin isn’t really known for much. He did an Irish movie called The Hole in the Ground, which I have seen but couldn’t tell you much about now.
Evil Dead Rise stars Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Jayden Daniels, and Gabrielle Echols. The official blurb on the movie is:
“A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.”
A “nightmarish version of family”? What? Like in the Fast & Furious series? I also have to say, this poster is a bit of a miss, since it looks exactly like the post for Smile.
The other downside of Evil Dead Rise is that there is no Bruce in it! He is serving as producer, but he is now officially retired as Ash from the series.
Evil Dead Rise is due out in cinemas on 21st April.
