The Coen Brothers decided to consciously uncouple for a short while to spread their wing as solo directors recently. Joel Coen went with The Tragedy of Macbeth last year. Now Ethan Coen has set his first project.

Joel’s first was based on the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The movie starred Denzel Washington as Macbeth. It also featured Frances McDormand, who also produced, alongside Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, Kathryn Hunter, and Brendan Gleeson.

Coen Brothers, both of them

The Tragedy of Macbeth had its world premiere at the 2021 New York Film Festival and following a limited release was made widely available via Apple TV+.

Now Ethan Coen is lumbering up for his first solo effort. This is said to be a Russ Meyer-inspired, 1970s exploitation-style lesbian road trip movie. Coen wrote this with his wife Tricia Cooke in the mid-2000s under the title of Drive-Away Dykes.

Faster Pussycat! Kil!, Kill!

Russ Meyer (1922–2004) was an American film director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, and editor. He is famous for his series of sexploitation movies that were both campy and satirical, while all having one distinguishing feature.

We see a theme developing here…

His most famous works are Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

This story will be an action-comedy about a party girl who takes a road trip from Philadelphia to Miami with her square, sensible friend. A severed head and a bitter ex-girlfriend will feature in a story that revolves around a mysterious briefcase and an evil senator.

Coen will direct the project, Cooke will work on the script with him while Robert Graf, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner joining them as producers. Filming begins this Summer for a 2023 release.
