Searchlight Pictures has premiered the full trailer Empire Of Light, the latest movie from Skyfall and 1917 director Sam Mendes. It is set in a coastal town in Southern England during the social changes of the early 1980s.

Empire Of Light

Filming began on 7 February 2022 at Margate on the Isle of Thanet, Kent. An old Victorian seaside resort, Margate was very much in decline for many years. Recently it has seen something of a rebirth with new high-speed trains into London, meaning people can relocate there and still work in the City. With a Turner Gallery and regeneration it is now potentially an up-and-coming area. The old Dreamland Margate Cinema building was remodelled and renamed for this movie.

Hilary (Olivia Colman), a woman with a difficult past and an uneasy present, is part of a makeshift family at the old Empire Cinema on the seafront. When Stephen (Micheal Ward) is hired to work in the cinema, the two find an unlikely attraction and discover the healing power of movies, music and community.

The movie co-stars Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke, Toby Jones, and Colin Firth. Empire of Light had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on 3 September 2022. The film is set for a limited theatrical release by Searchlight Pictures in the United States on 9 December 2022 and in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2023.

The critics response has been mixed around this, but there is talk of Coleman’s performance putting her in contention for a Oscar nomination. It is also thought that the movie itself will likely do well as awards season rolls around.
