Yesterday the Twittersphere had one of its classic love-hate pitched battles with itself when actress Ellen Page announced that she is now actor Elliot Page. Page came out as transgender with a post about their transition on social media on Tuesday, saying:

“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they, and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.”

Here is Page’s statement in full:

One immediate question some people asked was what would become of Page’s character of Vanya Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy. Some questioned if Page might not want to continue playing a role of a character of a gender different to their self-identified one for the entire third season of the series. Page is billed first in the show.

Netflix have placed this beyond any doubt. Page is staying with the show and the professional credit is already updated on the Netflix system. They also released a tweet in support:

“So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT! Can’t wait to see you return in season 3!.”

The Umbrella Academy was renewed for Season 3 last month.
