Ava DuVernay had already directed the pilot for the live action adaption of Vertigo comics DMZ. Now HBO Max has officially greenlit a four-part mini-series. The story takes place on what used to be Manhattan and is now a broken down demilitarized zone.
In the near future a second American Civil War has ripped the country apart. On one side is the federal government. On the other are the armies of the secessionist Free States. After heavy fighting an uneasy truce exists that could fracture at any moment.
The main character is a female medic on the island who is using her medical training to help people while trying to find her lost son in the DMZ. As things unfold she becomes an unlikely hero in an America without hope.
Production is slated to begin on the rest of the series in 2021. Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt star alongside Hoon Lee (Banshee).
