Christopher Walken has been officially cast as Emperor Shaddam IV, who rules over the known universe in Dune: Part Two.

The first half of Villeneuve’s Dune focused on House Atreides being gifted with the spice exploration of the desert planet Arrakis by the Emperor. However, all is not as it seems as the Emperor fears that the Atreides might make a move for his throne, so he plots with Baron Harkonnen to eliminate the Atreides family.

The rift has caused an all-out siege of the Atreides holdings on Arrakis. The second film will follow Leto’s son Paul, who escaped being killed alongside his mother, Lady Jessica.

Villeneuve revealed that Dune: Part Two would show more of House Harkonnen, as Paul Atreides starts an intergalactic revolution and challenges the Emperor himself. So I’m looking forward to seeing some classic Walken chewing up the scenes as the bad guy.

Dune 2

Walken joins an absolutely stellar cast of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgård and Javier Bardem. Also joining are Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan and Elvis star Austin Butler who will serve the Emperor as the villain Feyd-Rautha.

Fun Fact

Walken starred in the music video for the 2001 Fatboy Slim song Weapon of Choice and one of its lyrics is, “If you walk without rhythm, you won’t attract the worm.” That line is lifted from Dune, referring to the proper way to walk across the sand in order to not attract one of Arrakis’ gigantic sandworms.

Dune: Part Two’s release date is set for October 20, 2023. There’s also a spinoff series in development focused on the secret sisterhood known as the Bene Gesserit.
