Adam McKay was behind Vice and The Big Short. Both incisive movies based on real world events. While The Big Short was universally praised, Vice tended to polarize. Not surprising given the subject matter. Now he is back with Don’t Look Up. In these febrile times it feels like this one could polarize as well.

The story follows two low-level astronomers who identify an asteroid that is unquestionably going to impact the Earth and is big enough to destroy all life. They embark on a media tour to warn mankind of the approaching asteroid. What they find are some people completely unable, or unwilling, to process the message, or accept reality.

Jennifer Lawrence was already cast but the rest of the players are coming together and it really is shaping up to be a cast for the ages. Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel, Timothee Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry and Tomer Sisley are all joining up.

DiCaprio was apparently difficult to schedule as he is working on Killers of the Flower Moon at Apple TV with Scorsese.

McKay will write, direct and co-produce. It’s a Paramount gig, but with Netflix also in the mix. So it may get a very short theatrical release before it hits the streamer globally.
