Being tied to the MCU juggernaut, right now a self-fulfilling movie marketing machine, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was always going to do well. It may have got quite soft reviews and been said, by some, to merely be a retread of WandaVision that doesn’t really add much to the MCU overall, but that did not stop it.
It is now a contender for the highest-grossing movie of the year. It has passed the $800 million mark at the global box office, and in the process has overtaken The Batman as the biggest movie of the year so far.
It is still number one, three weeks after release, and has had a free run at tickets until Top Gun: Maverick arrives on Wednesday to try and take it on.
This means Marvel Studios could potentially have another potential $1 billion movie in their portfolio. Even if it fails to hit that mark, it will still have surpassed everything except Spider-Man: No Way Home which has been released since the pandemic hit.
An impending release on Disney+ doesn’t seem to have dented its progress in theaters.
So the MCU is showing no signs of slowing down. Thor: Love And Thunder is along later in the year and that may well pass Doctor Strange in ticket sales. Any studio executive looking at this is simply going to decide that superheroes remain their best ticket to cocaine and hookers, so greenlight a few more.
