With no Avengers in the plan for a while, the MCU was lacking a big team-up event. It is filling this gap with Thunderbolts in 2024. This is the Marvel version of The Suicide Squad but less R-rated. Based on their comic series, it will see a bad guy and anti-hero team being put together under U.S. government oversight.
Phase 5 is a really dense, and compact phase. It kicks off on 17th February next year with Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania and ends after just a year and a half. In that time it will have laid out six full movies and six Disney+ seasons of various MCU shows. Phase 5 will consist of (deep breath)…
In movie theaters we will get Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, Blade, Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts. A so-far secret and unannounced film is also set for release in February 2024.
Via the steamer there will be the second season of What If…?, Secret Invasion, Echo, the second season of Loki, Ironheart, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Daredevil: Born Again.
Phase Five is the middle portion of The Multiverse Saga, wrapped by phases 4 and 6. According to Deadline’s Justin Kroll via The Town podcast, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova will be the lead:
“[Pugh] has got the Marvel superhero that’s already got a spin-off. Upcoming for her, actually, on that character is this ‘Thunderbolts’ film, which is basically Marvel’s ‘Suicide Squad’. Hopefully, it has better results. But the concept is it’d be her leading the team.”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is tipped to be the Nick Fury-type government boss, that was Amanda Waller in the DCEU. That would mean US Agent will likely make the jump from Falcon and Winter Soldier to the big screen. Next weekend is the D23 Expo so we imagine that will be positively dripping in new information.
Thunderbolts is due out July 26th 2024.
