Disney continues where it left off with Maleficent by deciding that its truly evil villainesses require a sympathetic backstory. I wonder what it is that turns Cruella, a young, hopeful fashion enthusiast into a puppy-killing fur fetishist? I think I can guess. It is 2021 after all.

Now Disney has released a 60-second TV spot. This has new footage and shows us more of what made Cruella de Vil (Emma Stone) into the woman generations of children have loved to hate. 1970’s London is the setting for this story. Emma Thompson stars as the Baroness, the head of a fashion house who sees something in a young Cruella. Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser will play Jasper and Horace Badun who will go on to be her loyal criminal partners.

As far as I can tell it appears to be a girl-power Mannequin, by way of Disney does The Devil Wears Prada? It builds on the first trailer which you can see here.

Emily Beecham, Mark Strong, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Jamie Demetriou co-star. Craig Gillespie is the director and the movie is aiming for theatres on May 28th. No plans for a Disney+ simultaneous release so far, but that may change if the numbers from theatres continue to come back weak as the industry recovers from COVID-19.
