First of all, everyone thought it was some kind of WWE-style kayfabe setting up a wrestling stunt. Then they thought it was simply dramatized to sell tickets ahead of an eventual franchise return in Fast 9. Then, finally, it started to seem as if the feud was very real. Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel really had fallen out spectacularly and Johnson likely wouldn’t appear in Fast And Furious 10.
With the end of the franchise coming into view with Fast And Furious 10, Vin Diesel wants Dwayne Johnson to return for the franchise capper.
As this is 2021 and the world is populated by emotionally incontinent children, who are required to play out every drama in their lives in front of the entire world via social media, he couldn’t just pick up the damned telephone. It has to be public and emotionally overwrought.
So Diesel posted an open invite via Instagram to ask actor Dwayne Johnson to return for the upcoming tenth entry in the Fast & Furious franchise. Whatever happened to two guys settling their differences over a beer in the corner of a smokey bar?
So far, so cringe, but undoubtedly heartfelt. Johnson joined the franchise in 2011’s shot-in-the-arm that was Fast Five as Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs. Hobbs was originally the quasi-bad guy before teaming up with the “fambly” in the sixth movie.
Johnson wasn’t in Fast 9 but instead headlined the spin-off Hobbs & Shaw with Jason Statham. Diesel’s post says:
“I say this out of love… but you must show up, do not leave the franchise idle you have a very important role to play. Hobbs can’t be played by no other. I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny.”
Sounds a bit overwrought for a movie series that is essentially a comic book version of Japanese Performance Car magazine brought to life to appeal to the kind of people who touch themselves at the auto-parts store, but OK then.
Justin Lin will direct the next movie in the Fast And Furious series which is currently targeting an April 7th, 2023 release. This is expected to be the first in a two-part finale. Let’s hope it ends Blakes 7 style, right?
