The only thing better than Rachel Weisz, is two Rachel Weiszes. Yep, Weisz is playing twins in a remake of David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers, and here is the teaser for it.
In the original movie, the Dead Ringers were played by Jeremy Irons, so there has to be a gender swap. In this new series, Weisz plays Elliot and Beverly Mantle:
“…twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront.”
Elliot? That’s a boy’s name. I did check and yes, one of the Mantle twins has a boy’s name.
The original came out in 1988, but this new series has a different tone as it explores women’s healthcare and the issues it faces. Sigh! It looked good, but then you read about it and it all falls apart.
Apparently, Weisz is a big fan of the original movie, telling Vogue that the original movie was:
“just seared into my memory. I liked that it was deeply psychological, deeply twisted, perverse, and thrilling. I think that’s quite fertile territory.“
This new Dead Ringers series will be streaming on 21st April on Amazon Prime.
