The Hollywood Reporter is carrying a story saying that Tom Cruise is a massive fan of Andy Muschietti’s The Flash. According to the reports, Cruise had a meeting with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav in late February. Zaslav mentioned how great The Flash is, and how the audience scores have been the strongest seen for a while in the genre.
Cruise asked to see it and Zaslav arranged for a copy to be sent to Cruise’s home in Beverly Hills, for a supervised screening before the copy was securely returned to the studio. The verdict?
Cruise was so impressed that he cold-called director Muschietti to rave about the movie, telling the filmmaker:
“[The Flash] is everything you want in a movie, this is the kind of movie we need now”.
Cruise’s recent effort, Top Gun: Maverick, was very deliberately toned by Cruise himself as a slice of pure Americana. It chimed with audiences, propelled it to a $1.49 billion gross, and led to Cruise being proclaimed by Spielberg as the savior of Hollywood, and the savior of theater distribution.
New DC co-head James Gunn has already called The Flash:
“…probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.”
These types of endorsements perhaps show why the studio was so determined to keep the project on track, even as its star had a well-publicized spiral into some personal issues.
Warner Bros. will screen the finished movie for theater owners at CinemaCon in April. The Flash will be released on June 16th.
