Shawn and I have been talking about extreme cinema and controversial movies, but this time the movie is a little different. It’s the original French version of Martyrs from 2008.

Firstly, this is extreme cinema. It’s very brutal, unpleasant, and not easy to watch, but the ending of Martyrs is something that you will think about over and over again.

The video of Shawn and myself talking about it does contain spoilers and, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, be warned…

*Spoilers Ahead*

We open with a girl chained in a basement somewhere. She is being kept alive but also being tortured. She escapes, only to find another girl is kept there. They both get away, but one of the girls wants revenge on whoever had kidnapped her.

She turns up at a family home and proceeds to slaughter the entire family with a shotgun. This is only the first act.

The second act is about one of the girls and shows that when she was in the basement she was beaten, but kept alive. At this point we have no idea why. A man will enter her room, beat the shit out of her, and leave only to have someone else come and feed her and basically get her ready for another day.

In the third act of Martyrs we find out what is going on. A secret society, a cult of elites, is trying to find out what happens at the point of death. They do this by kidnapping girls, who seem more receptive, and torturing them to the point of death.

The main girl in the story is particularly susceptible to this, to the point where she is skinned alive and on the very verge of death. One of the elite talks to her and the girl whispers something back to her, the lady then just leaves and kills herself.

This begs the question, what did the girl say? Did she give her the answer to life, the universe, and everything? Did she tell her it was nothing? If you have seen the movie, you know what I mean, I saw it a year ago and I’m still thinking about it now.

*End of Spoilers*

I would say that Martyrs is a movie that everyone should watch at least once in their lives. As I said, it’s not pleasant, but it’s incredibly interesting.
