Eddie Murphy has already claimed that Coming 2 America is funnier than the original, and now Wesley Snipes is in agreement.
Craig Brewer’s anticipated sequel will also introduce a number of new characters, one of which will be played by Snipes.
Speaking to ET, Snipes opened up some about what to expect from him in the sequel –
“I am the big brother [of Vanessa Bell Calloway’s Imani Izzi]. I am also the one that is making sure that everything in the whole region is under control. My name is General Izzi. We can make it hard or we can do it easy. It is up to you.”
Murphy previously stated that the sequel is funnier than the original, and now Snipes seems to back that claim up –
“You’re going to have to wear a diaper! You’re going to have to put something or some pad underneath because you’re going to just leak all over yourself. I am telling you.”
Snipes also notes that he and the rest of the cast had a riot making the movie –
“There was a couple of times where we were in a couple of scenes where the laughing, it just, kicks in. And there were some funny people on this particular production. A lot of talented people… and a lot of the older, or the original cast, has rejoined. So very interesting things you’re going to see with this one.”
Snipes also recalls when he auditioned for the role of Darryl Jenks, which went to Eriq La Salle in the original –
“I think it was myself, Eriq La Salle, and I want to say Mario Van Peebles was the finalist in getting that role — and I didn’t get it. I remember [being] in my bathroom, in front of the mirror, and the Denzel Washington tear running down my face. So sad. I thought my career was over. How could I lose that opportunity to work with Eddie Murphy?”
Coming 2 America will return to the African country of Zamunda where Prince Akeem is to be named king. However, Akeem learns he has a son in America. With this, his dying father tasks him with finding his son and groom him to be the next crown prince.
Starring alongside Murphy and Snipes are, Arsenio Hall as Semmi, Jermaine Fowler as Lavelle, Leslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother, Shari Headley as Lisa McDowell, John Amos as Cleo McDowell, Tracy Morgan as Reem, and James Earl Jones as King Jaffe Joffer.
Coming 2 America is currently slated to open in theaters on December 18th, although there’s a good chance it could head directly to a streaming service.
