Many critics and fans have Blade Runner 2049 near the top of their list of best films of 2017. However, it became a box-office bomb, grossing $267.5 million worldwide against a production budget between $150–185 million. In the process, it demonstrated why the first one is also a cult hit, but not really a thing outside cinephiles and people like us. The Blade Runner universe is a big deal for us, and barely registers with normies.
That isn’t stopping Amazon. They are making Blade Runner a priority. An official third installment is in the works – Blade Runner 2099 – which will take the form of a series on the streamer. It will follow on from, and fit with, Ridley Scott’s original 1982 film and Denis Villeneuve’s sequel.
On The Hot Mic podcast, reporter Jeff Sneider says that Jodie Comer is reported to be circling a key role, and this has come about after working with Ridley Scott on The Last Duel. She was up for Napoleon but that fell through.
Scott is executive producing the series with Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) writing. Scott will also executive produce under his Scott Free Productions banner for Amazon Studios and Alcon Entertainment.
The storyline and characters are unknown, outside of the pretty safe assumption it takes place 50 years after the last installment.
